Net Rooms
September 15th 2008 08:06 am
Sorry for the late update. I got too distracted by Tales of Vesperia again. It’s just too addictive. The storyline keeps pulling me back in. anyways, I just recently read this and watched on CNN (This is where the picture came from). In Japan, unemployment is at an all time high. A lot of people can go out of business so easily and loss everything in hte process. Well, I learned that people who are unemployed and wants to find a job rent out these rent rooms. They are extremely small closet like rooms that people who are unemployed use to stay and try to find jobs. It also contains a computer for people who are staying in those rooms to search the net to find a job. Hence “Net Room”. It cost $15 a day to stay in these rooms. A real estate developer Sachihiko Kawamata of the Tsukasa Group whom have been developing places like this had no idea that such amount of people are like this. People staying at these Net Rooms are at a 100%. The people who are staying in these rooms are dubbed Net Room Refugees.
In my opinion, this is really shocking. For a country like Japan to have this high of an unemployment rate is pretty bad. It amazes me on how many people are unemployed or lost their way of living. Being an otaku who researched on Japanese culture and stuff before I went to Japan, I can’t believe I didn’t read about this. The person being interview by CNN is a former art gallery owner who lost everything and now trying to find a job after his family left him. To make ends meat, he got some low paying job to pay for the room and food. This to me, it’s a really sad story. It’s not just him, there are hundreds of people like him who lost their way of living. I think to resolve this unemployment issue is to open up more jobs and more successful companies or have foreign companies go in to Japan and decrease the unemployment rate. Well, this is too much for a guy like to solve, but something has to be done. A suggestion would be nice to help these poor people out.
What do you all think what should had been done to decrease the unemployment rate in Japan?
I know here in Canada. The unemployment rate isn’t high but there are a lot of people living in proverty in Toronto. When I do see a homeless person, I give some spare chance if I can. It might help them in the long run.
To watch the CNN video go here.

That’s really sad
But at least , people that live in those rooms have a room to be safe … but well it’s not free so people with no job and money …
Anyway it’s awful to lose everything like that … it’s a proof that you can never take something for granted …
Well, reality is tough.
I believe its an issue here in malaysia too, but we have more on unemplyed Uni-graduates.
Either:
- they are too choosy in picking jobs for big pays
- they cant apply what they learned
- pure unlucky/ got retrenched as company in big trouble.
- dont bother to try, and destined to die as a loser.
A net room seems a good idea. Atleast they have a place to live for a cheap price, and a way to find a job. In many other countries when you’re out a job that’s it for you- right?
I was never aware of that sort of situation in Japan, although it doesn’t surprise me for some reason (perhaps by now I’m just totally numb to the various problems in the world) I’ve no idea what the situation in the UK is…
That video was depressing. :[
The economy over here has been pretty bad lately too. People are laid off all the time and it’s hard as heck to find a job.
On a different topic, omg you have Tales of Vesperia! *jealous*
yeah, quite depressing video.. It’s been a problem for Japan for few years already about this issue.. I hope things will get better tho
I’m still waiting for my Tales of Vesperia to arrive hehe (bought X360 while I was in Japan). My gamer tag is ronaldhw, add me
I read about it this morning. Yes, very sad indeed.
James: So true…never take anything for granted!!!
E-jump: Well, here universities actually sometimes help you. Some people are too picky on what job they want…try small then work up…
Catherine: Since i took World Issues back in highschool, I’m aware what’s happening in the world…
Coco The Bean: It’s an addictive game… I hope the economy gets better soon!!!
Ron~: Will do when I have time to go on!!!!!
TDOMJ: So sad indeed…
The Japanese economic state is in a strange spiral state. Since it’s still isolationist, compared to other open markets, it is protected against bigger ‘crashes’ affecting the world, however it still has its own fair share of issues to deal with. I know for one thing, that the cost of fuel and the shortages are making things nightmarish.
Given the way the Japanese innovate though I have a feeling they’ll be able to bounce back sooner than later. At least, the optimist side of me would like to think so!
i feel really bad for that guy. i hope his life gets better
Len-Vesper: Well, an economy of any country will change in an instant…depending on how it works. I don’t know how the economy in Japan is right now. It seems to be really bad one day then really good in an other.
Otaku dan: I hope too!!!
I wish I could play tales of Vesperia…alas it’s an XBox360 title.
